Looking through all my apps permissions through the mypermissions app I was quite surprised at some of the data the apps had access to. For example why would an app need access to my inbox? Looking into it further I discovered these apps were the OS of my devices of which I had added my … Continue reading Digital security![]()

Week 3 of 23 Things – Thing 6: Accessibility
The second of week 3’s Things, Thing 6 was all about accessibility. This is something that I was very aware of in 2004 when I first started to work in e-Learning as it was then (now Technology Enhanced Learning). Something has got lost along the way I feel, especially in how people deal with accessibility […]
Week 3 of 23 Things – Thing 5: Diversity
Yay for diversity online. It’s amazing how long diversity has taken to reach online websites and for websites like Bitmoji to come online. I like the idea of representing a more authentic version of yourself, allbeit in cartoon format online, hence my choice for big red thumbs up gloves for my avatar. When most young […]
Thing 5: Diversity
An app (I can’t remember which one) recently insisted on showing me how I could change the skin colour of emoji. I was horrified and couldn’t imagine ever using that option. I’d always thought of… More![]()
23 Things: Thing 5 Diversity
“A lot of communication online is now via the mode of emoji/emoticon images. Traditionally these have been displayed as a yellow standard, but recent releases of more diverse emoji choices have raised a number of conversations. Read the two articles on reactions to the Apple and Facebook release of diverse emoji/emoticons in 2015 and 2016. Now consider […]
Thing 4: Digital Security
I thought the Information Commissioner’s Office smartphone security documents were great. Sensible, straightforward and clear. They prompted me to check that I have my phone set to require a password for in-app purchases, delete a… More![]()
access to things
I am participating in the University of Edinburgh digital skills course ‘23 things for digital knowledge‘. Thing 6 is about accessibility. I was listening on Radio 4 to ‘tweet of the day’ this morning while scrolling through Twitter and I mused on the possibility of having tweets actually tweeted, as in spoken outloud. A quick …
digital footprints
Like john Muir says ‘ take only memories, eave only footprints’, but of course he believed the footprints would be washed away by the wind and the rain.. I havent left man y footprints- but i think this is a coincidence , of my age, politics and profession .. and ironically the learning process of entering into the digital era will require me to leave many more. Already twitter and tumblr now have a profile for me and are harvesting the (little) data I give them. My hopes are that the greater amounts of data collected about everyone else wil continue to protect me from casual disclosure. the two online articles my friend was able to source i had written two years ago have now been buried n google under a raft of pseudonymous shit and pictures of Ewan McGregor. It might be a better world if we all lived under alias es – a world of partial , assumed identitites and easy asignation. But I am aware that for most of the aspirant users of 23 things that this is nt the case, and the caveats about hw their online identities can follow them are probably real , which is profoundly saddening. I am suresome of them will find ways of resisting – better ones than opting out..

Bonus Thing A
Bonus thing A is to create a definitive ‘About Me’ page. I find it difficult to write about myself and get the right balance between too little and too much information. However, I’ve had a… More![]()
